While the windows are decorative set pieces of your home’s exterior, improving the look of your home isn’t all they do. They also play a key role in regulating your home’s comfort levels and overall energy efficiency.
Their additional role is the main reason ENERGY STAR®’s blue label is an important consideration during your window replacement project. Renewal by Andersen® of New Mexico explains more.
Understanding the Blue Label
The blue ENERGY STAR® label is proof and an indicator that the product has met the gold standards in terms of energy efficiency. These products are also made from environmentally responsible materials and manufacturing processes, which means less impact to the environment on top of being as energy-efficient as possible.
Energy Performance Ratings
The blue label has several ratings you should be aware of. These are what will help you determine if they are the energy-efficient choice for your window replacement project. These are:
Solar Heat Gain Coefficient
The U-Factor measures how well the window keeps heat from escaping. The lower the U-Factor, the better. You also want lower ratings for Solar Heat Gain Coefficient and Air Leakage as this is how well the window resists unwanted heat gain and air leaks, respectively. As for Visible Transmittance, this is how well the window lights your home. You want higher numbers for this one.
At Renewal by Andersen® of New Mexico, we are proud that all of our windows are ENERGY STAR-rated. Our window frames and sashes are made of Fibrex®, an eco-friendly composite material that has the benefits of wood and vinyl combined, without the drawbacks. This gives our windows higher durability and increased energy efficiency.
On top of that, we also use High-Performance™ Low-E4® glass for our window glazing. Our SmartSun™ glass option block 95% of harmful UV light, and it also makes our windows 70% more energy-efficient during summer and 49% more energy-efficient during winter.
